Turtle Bay Museum

Redding, California

A Ken Kay Associates master plan is guiding the development of the new Turtle Bay Museum, which displays the story of the region and its people and ecology. The master plan for the museum, located within the 300-acre Turtle Bay Exploration Park, evolved to include the adjacent arboretum and botanical gardens across the river. We recommended to our clients that the two sites be linked with an extraordinary bridge by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. Calatrava was commissioned to design the Sundial Bridge that now transports pedestrians across the Sacramento River connecting them to a river trail system. The circulation plan for the new museum located buildings and parking away from the sensitive riverfront and environmentally sensitive areas and provided boardwalks that allow visitors to experience bottomland forests as part of the arrival experience at the museum buildings.
